FAQ

THANK YOU for stopping by my little corner of the internet. I’m so happy y’all are here and interested in me and my work.

Y’ALL MEANS ALL in my world, meaning I’m proud to be an inclusive photographer of people and families of all shapes and sizes, including those in the LGBTQ+ community and any person regardless of race, religion, culture, etc.

This page should fill y’all in on the rest of the nitty-gritty details about working with me and will hopefully save y’all time emailing or calling with questions, but of course, if y’all still have questions or concerns not answered here, please feel free to contact me!

See covid updates here.

  • My sessions are easy-going and relaxed, focusing on emotions, connections, and love. I believe in kids being kids and families being themselves, and I aim to capture y’all just as perfectly imperfect as y’all are. I don’t force little ones to do anything that causes stress, anxiety, or most importantly, tears.

I believe the most beautiful photos come from sessions that flow naturally and I strive to create authentic images that reflect y’all. I prefer to keep things simple, real, and most importantly fun; not stiff or formal. I think of poses a starting point. What happens before and after the pose is often where the magic is.

So, if you’re looking for every photo to be perfectly posed, with all smiles, every hair in place, and everyone looking at the camera, I may not be the right photographer for you. And that’s okay!

Please browse my website, blog, and recent sessions on Facebook and Instagram to get an idea of the kind of images you’ll receive, and if what y’all want isn’t reflected in my work, we may not be the best fit and again, that is perfectly okay!

After booking your session, we’ll work together to create the story you want your images to tell, location ideas, what to wear, etc.

  • Sweet, let's talk!  Just shoot me a message here and let's make some magic together.  I suggest contacting me 4 - 6 weeks in advance to ensure your desired date, but feel free to contact me at any ol' time, just please keep in mind I may not be available on short notice. Once we've selected a date, I require a signed session contract and non-refundable session retainer which locks in your date. No dates will be held or sessions considered booked without these things. No exceptions.

  • Please get in touch for all the details on my rates. And yes, I do offer payment plans. I get that custom photography is an investment and paying a lump sum isn't always ideal.

  • No, I LOVE to travel!  While based in Austin, I am frequently in the DFW area and every few years I typically hold sessions in New York, Los Angeles, and other stops along my annual roadtrips. Your session may or may not require a travel fee, depending on where and when it takes place. Just get in touch and I’ll give you more details.

I'm always looking to add more cities to the list, so if you want me to hit the road and head to your town, please don’t hesitate to ask, I can’t make any promises, but if there is enough interest, there’s a good chance I can make sessions happen somewhere near you.

The best way to find out where my travel sessions are headed next, sign-up for my mailing list for the latest news, subscriber-only promotions, and other good stuff.

  • I’m a natural light photographer and often work outdoors, however, I also love to do at-home sessions.  While I do have my favorite outdoor spots, I love to collaborate, explore, and try out new places, and we will work together to find the perfect spot.

  • Yes!  At your home can also be a great location choice and for newborns/baby sessions, I typically only work at your home.  We will discuss this in greater detail during the booking process.

  • I'd say 99.9% of my clients tell me they’re awkward in front of the camera and hate having their photos taken (myself included), even the ones that might look totally natural and oh-so-photogenic.  And your kids?  Don’t worry, I’ve seen it all and can handle it, plus y’all will receive a pre-session guide full of tips to get ready everyone ready.Trust me.  My job is to make y'all feel comfortable, break that awkward barrier and draw out your authentic selves. So, please don’t stress, y'all most definitely do not need to be models. Y’all simply need to be honest, open, and remember how much y’all love another, and y’all will do great!

  • Please don’t be anxious about there not being enough time. I’ll never leave a session without making sure we get some great shots, including a mix of modern, authentic portraits and lifestyle images. Please let me know if you have any doubts so we can talk through them.

  • Take a deep breath and don't stress out.  Check out this blog post for advice. Once your session is booked, you'll get a pre-session guide, which includes additional what-to-wear tips, and I’ll be here every step of the way to help you style your session.

  • I don’t limit your outfit changes and multiple locations are up for discussion, but there may be additional charges depending on the location and distance. Just please keep in mind that the time it takes for y’all to change or for us to move to another location does count toward your session time.

  • I love meeting the whole big family, so please get in touch about booking a multi-generational/extended family sessions.

Generally, it is best to have only those being photographed at the session, but exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis. Please ask before bringing anyone else to your session.

  • Yes, the “magic or golden hour.”  The hour or two after sunrise and before sunset are when the natural light is at its best... soft, warm, and oh-so-flattering. Accordingly, I only book sessions in the morning or late afternoon/early evening, and if at all possible, do not schedule outdoor sessions during the middle of the day (approx. 10 am - 3 pm).

Trust me, you really don’t want to shoot during the harsh, unflattering (and often hot) midday sun.

  • Nothing really. We will be moving around a lot, so be prepared to carry anything you bring and know that it may be get photographed

Those with young children may want to bring a diaper bag to leave nearby or in the car with snacks and water/juice (avoid sugar or anything that can stain clothing) if you have small children. However, I recommend fueling up before your session. Everyone is happier when they aren't hungry.

  • Nope, just relax and look forward to your session. But something to keep in mind is that most kiddos (and adults!) are in better moods if they have full bellies and had a good night’s sleep. Easier said than done, I know. Just something to keep in mind and strive for. Once your session is booked, you’ll also get a pre-session guide to help you get ready.

  • Texas weather can be fickle. One moment it’s pouring and an hour later the sun is out and that post-rain sky and light is swoon-worthy. Of course, I want things to be perfect at shoot time, but unfortunately nature doesn’t always cooperate and a prediction of rain, windy, or less than ideal conditions are not always a reason for a canceling session right away. In many cases, the session can take place as scheduled without significant interference and the light can actually be quite nice on overcast days.

Thus, cancellation/rescheduling due to weather is at the photographer’s discretion only. Should bad weather potentially be an issue with your session, I’ll be in contact with our options, and if there is inclement weather at the time of the shoot, we will reschedule free-of-charge. If there is no inclement weather and we can proceed, but you still choose to cancel your session, a $50 Rescheduling Fee may be charged.

  • I realize that sometimes life gets in the way of our plans, people get sick, and things come up. My rescheduling and cancellation policies are as follows:

・If you need to reschedule your session for a different date or time, please do so at least 10 days prior to the scheduled date.

・Except in the case of an illness or emergency, if you reschedule less than 10 days before the scheduled date a $50 Rescheduling Fee will be charged.

・You, the client, are responsible for contacting me to reschedule and if the session is not rebooked within 2 months, an additional $50 Rescheduling Fee will be charged.

・If you do not show up for the session, the entire session fee will be forfeited.

・All session retainers and fees are non-refundable and can only be transferred once to a rescheduled date due to illness or emergency without incurring potential additional fees.

  • Please keep in mind that when you book a session I arrange my schedule around the bookings for that day/week/month, turn away other potential clients or work, and otherwise plan my work and life around sessions.

If you book a session, then cancel on short notice or the day before, not only am I not able to fill that time with another session on such short notice, but I may have to move around other clients and obligations to accommodate you at a later time.

  • It depends...

IN TEXAS: I’ll travel to just about any location* within 30 miles of me, in Austin 78704 or in DFW 76109.

IN THE LA AREA: I’ll travel to just about any location* within 15 miles of me in 91602.

For locations outside these areas, a negotiated fee on a per-client basis will be applied to cover roundtrip time and travel expenses: base rates start at $25/per hour travel fee + mileage reimbursement costs (reimbursement rate follows the current year’s IRS business rate and the starting point is 78704/my place).

*VENUE FEES: More and more popular locations are charging a fee for professional photography sessions. If you choose to use a location that charges a fee, you will be required to pay the fee, as well as potentially any other fees the venue may charge, like admission or parking fees. Though generally not available on holidays, I realize that sometimes this is the only opportunity you have and I can sometimes make an exception, however, a $50 Holiday Fee may apply. Please inquire for more details.

  • Within a week of your session, you’ll receive a sneak peek of your images. Then approximately 2 – 4 weeks after your shoot, depending on my workload, you will receive a private, password-protected online gallery. Please note that this gallery will only remain online for seven (7) days and it will be $25 to repost. Orders will not be processed until payment is received in full. Depending upon your order, please allow 2 – 4 weeks for product delivery. Back-ups of your shoot will be kept for 18 months and there is a $25 fee to resend final, edited photos or repost archived sessions.

  • If there’s a specific photo you want but it’s not included in your gallery, I’m happy to take a quick peek to see if I have it or something similar, but cannot make any promises. But chances are, if you don't see it in your gallery, it most likely either doesn't exist or didn't make the cut.

I discard the outtakes and duplicates, as well as images with closed eyes, awkward expressions, blurry, etc. Then I choose the 'best of the best' for your gallery. I do everything I can to ensure you have a full, diverse gallery.

Also, since I shoot in RAW, there is still much editing to be done after the image is captured. I spend a good amount of time carefully culling, curating, and editing the best images from your session.

  • No, and there are several reasons why I, along with the vast majority of photographers, do not show clients every single frame taken.  For one thing, I shoot in what’s called RAW, and those image files are not processed so it’s like looking at a film negative or an unfinished painting, and you need special software to not only view them, but use them in any meaningful way.  There are also shots with closed eyes, funny faces, duplicate images, and so on.  And finally, part of your investment with me is trusting my vision and art of culling the images for the best gallery of images.  This is why communicating any needs and wishes with me prior to your session is so important.

Far more time goes into post-processing than the actual photo session, as I make adjustments to each image file, individually.  If I edited all the image files from every shoot, it would not only be a huge waste of time, but would dramatically alter and increase my prices.

  • Most definitely! Every image you receive is hand-edited by me and includes corrections for color and exposure, clarity adjustments, and other basic image corrections, edits, and light cropping.

I also do some minor retouching, which includes minimal spot removal (a small blemish or bruise, a small spot on clothing, and the like). So, for example, I'll remove obvious blemishes, but I’m not going to make you magically lose weight or give you a nose job.

And if I think a photo will look even better in black and white, I’ll include some of those as well.

If extensive re-touching is wanted, there is an hourly charge for that and is not done in-house, but outsourced. The rate is set by an outside agency.  Examples of extensive retouching includes, but not limited to removing key components from an image (a tree, a home, a person in the background, etc), enhancing the look of a person beyond color correction, exposure or contrast (smoothing excessive wrinkles or acne, thinning of body parts, etc). Please inquire for more details.

  • No, I don't give RAW files away. I get asked this question every once in a while, but often enough that I found a great article that explains why I do not give my RAW files away. You can read it here.

  • When purchasing digital files, think about how y'all will use the files. If you intend to use the images files to primarily share online (blogs, social media, etc.) then low-resolution may be a good choice for you. Low-resolution images are smaller, perfect for social media, and will load quickly on web pages. These files are not high quality or large enough for printing beyond 4x6.

If you intend to use the files to print your images, you will want to invest in high-resolution images. These image files are larger and are a high enough quality for printing images of any size up to 16x20, in addition to creating other print products.

The beauty of investing in the hi-res images is that y'all can get those printed yourselves as much as y'all want. Through your license and print release, y'all will be able to get prints for yourselves, to give as gifts, make holiday cards, photo books, etc. This is why the hi-res digital images are a greater investment than lo-res and traditional prints.

  • But, of course! Nothing makes me happier than knowing how much y'all love the images we make together! It would also be oh-so-lovely for you to tag me in your posts. The only thing I ask is to PLEASE DO NOT apply any filters, crop out any watermarks, or alter the photos in any way. They are ready to be shared as they are. Thank you!

  • Not exactly. Simply put: I retain the copyright to all the photos and you cannot claim them as your own or alter them without my express written consent and knowledge. With your final photos, you'll receive a personal use license and print release, giving you the right to reprint images, however, you may not sell the images, publish them, enter them in a contest, or profit from them in any way without the written consent of me.

More specifically. All images, whether print, digital, or shared by me online, are yours for personal use and enjoyment only. Images from your session may not be used for commercial purposes without my written consent and knowledge. Please do not claim them as your own, copy or alter the photos, apply additional image filters or otherwise 'enhance' the photos, they are ready to go as is. Please do not distribute the photos to third-parties, for profit, publication, enter them in any contests whatsoever, or any other profit/income/money-making activities without my written consent and knowledge.

You will be asked to sign a model release which allows me to use the images from your session for portfolio and marketing purposes only; I will never ever sell your images to a third-party without your prior written consent and knowledge.

  • I’d love that! The best way to stay in touch is by subscribing to my newsletter and following me on social media This occasional email means you’ll be first to know about special subscriber-only promotions, event announcements, and all the latest news from me. I hang out mostly on Instagram, which is my favorite way to interact with people (next to in person) and then Facebook, so give me some love there.

  • I've got answers! Please message me. Looking forward to working with y'all!
